United Nations University ,Tokyo, Japan acknowledged the operation of a Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE-Tirupati) on ‘Education for Sustainable Development’ under the Chairmanship of Prof.R.Ramamurthi. The Foundation is being launched at Orion Hall of Hotel Pai Viceroy on Oct 1st 2015 at 7.30 pm.

Water scarcity 

“Water scarcity” refers to the volumetric abundance, or lack thereof, of water supply. This is typically calculated as a ratio of human water consumption to available water supply in a given area. Water scarcity is a physical, objective reality that can be measured consistently across regions and over time.

While water is a renewable resource, it is at the same time a finite resource. The total quantity of water available on the globe is the same as it was two thousand years ago.

WATER--WORK ELEMENTS--Major emphasis will be laid on integrated approach for water management because of inter-relationships of Ecosystem, Water, Biodiversity, Climate change and Land use.

  • Water Shed: What is water shed and how do we develop it- Video and real models to be shown
  • Water Harvesting: Methods of saving and storing rain water in towns, villages and tribal habitations.
  • Judicious Use: Conservative use of water and to avoid wastage
  • Water Recycling: Educate people as to how we recycle used water for agro/horticulture
  • Training/ Methodology of learning methods of developing soak pits for water recharge
  • Ecological Foot prints/ Bio-capacity- What is the importance and how to set limits?
  • Water Foot print- Sensitize on water requirements and management
  • Carbon Foot print-Create awareness of need to control carbon emissions.
  • On the field demonstration is an important component

Rural and less educated urban communities are to be trained in implementing the concepts of ‘water saved is water produced’.

Water Shed

The main objectives are to restore the ecological balance by harnessing, conserving and developing degraded natural resources such as soil, vegetative cover and water.  The outcomes are  prevention of soil run-off, regeneration of natural vegetation, rain water harvesting and recharging of the ground water table.  This enables  multi-cropping and the introduction of diverse agro-based activities, which help to provide sustainable livelihoods to the people residing in the watershed area.  In addition, there is a Scheme of Technology Development, Extension and Training (TDET) is also being implemented to promote development of cost effective and proven technologies to support watershed management..

Water Harvesting

It means capturing rain where it falls or capturing the run off in your own village or town. And taking measures to keep that water clean by not allowing polluting activities to take place in the catchment.

Therefore, water harvesting can be undertaken through a variety of ways

  • Capturing runoff from rooftops
  • Capturing runoff from local catchments
  • Capturing seasonal floodwaters from local streams
  • Conserving water through watershed management

These techniques can serve the following the following purposes:

  • Provide drinking water
  • Provide irrigation water
  • Increase groundwater recharge
  • Reduce stormwater discharges, urban floods and overloading of sewage treatment plants
  • Reduce seawater ingress in coastal areas.
